Q&A on Two Important Issues: Responsible Parenthood and Artificial Contraception
|
|
Use of contraceptives of all types, including the condom and other devices, degrades human sexuality, and creates a false sense of security. None of them are 100% effective against sexually transmitted diseases, no matter how they are used.

What is responsible parenthood?
House Bill 3773 defines responsible parenthood as “the will, ability, and commitment of parents to respond to the needs and aspirations of their family, particularly through family planning.” However, responsible parenthood goes beyond simply providing for a family’s material needs. It means respect for one’s generative and procreative functions. It calls upon married couples to be prudent and generous in deciding to have a large family, or, for serious reasons, in choosing to have no more children for a time, or indefinitely, as ruled by their consciences, arriving at these judgments before God. Responsible parenthood is not the same as limiting family size.
Why do we object to artificial contraceptives?
Widespread use of contraception is inevitably the first step towards legalization of abortion. Contraception and abortion are linked in their mentality of choosing one’s self over the rights of the unborn. Consider that in the United States, more than 9 of 10 women are using contraception. Yet half of all pregnancies are considered “unintended,” and half of these, or 1.5 million annually, are terminated by surgical abortion. This shows that if a woman chooses not to have children, and opts to use contraceptives, she is likely to resort to having an abortion if contraception fails.
Many so-called contraceptives not only impede conception, but also cause abortions, or the cessation of pregnancy. The Birth Control Pill, Intra-Uterine Devices (IUD), Depo-Provera, injectibles, “emergency contraceptives” and so on are abortifacients, despite what the authors of HB 3773 say. Our Constitution has vowed to protect life from the moment of conception, so we cannot deny the presence of life by claiming that these Pills merely prevent uterine implantation and not pregnancy.
